A Torx Screwdriver is not a make, model or brand of Screwdriver. This is a common misconception, The word Torx refers to the actual shape of the screwdriver head. Torx Screwdrivers are not as common place as Phillips or flat head screwdrivers, however there are many uses for them, and they are beginning to become more popular. And are now a common addition to a standard toolbox.

The Torx head is a 6 pointed star screwdriver head. It was developed by Camcar LLC of Acument Global Technologies and it is the trademark for a screw head defined by a star shape with 6 points. The Torx head is often reffered to as a "star" head by people who are unfamiliar with the trademarked name.

Torx Screws are used more widely these days, but were used as a form of anti tamper device, as the 6 point torx screwdriver was not widely available. Torx screws are seen most commonly in Bicycle brakes, cars and automobiles, consumer electronics and computer components. The computer manufacturer compaq uses torx screw heads almost exclusivley (T15 variant).

Torx Screwdrivers offer a far tighter grip on the head of the screw than phillips or slot head screwdrivers, and are far less likely to Cam-out than these other types. ( Cam-out is what happens when the driver slips in the screw head ).
